Getting into shape for wrestling is a process that many do not start until they get close to wrestling season. Yes, you should have been doing that in the off-season, lifting weights, doing calisthenics, and eating correctly. But, you didn't, and there is about 4 weeks to go until the season starts. So where do you start? You will have to work hard in order to catch up but it is not an impossible task.

Do not stop eating!

Diet is an important ingredient to any weight loss program no matter what it is you are trying to accomplish. However far too often an athlete will attempt to lose 20 pounds by starving themselves for weeks at a time. This is a big mistake! Eating is important because it supplies the fuel and building blocks that are needed to make the body run at optimal levels, if there are not enough carbohydrates you cannot perform at your best.

The same holds true for protein, if you are are not receiving adequate levels you will not be able to rebuild the muscle that is weakened during training and your body will then start to eat it's own muscle tissue in order to make up for it. This will cause the muscles to atrophy and strength will be diminished. You do not want that.

Eat more often

Eating small frequent meals is the key to being able to cut weight and still have the necessary energy levels to train, lift weights, and compete. The best is to have four meals each day, and have two high quality snacks each day. I am not talking about having four happy meals and two snicker bars, instead aim on the light side such as a tuna or turkey breast sandwich with light mayo. A great example for a snack would be lightly salted pretzels, or a serving of grapes. Again your goal is to keep the body energy level up in order to be able to cut body fat while retaining muscle mass.

Push the water

The human body is made up of mostly water and as such, if you get dehydrated your energy level will suffer as well. Water is also needed for digestion because it is a key element in breaking down food into smaller particles to be used by your cells. Try to drink at least eight cups of water a day and you will be able to feel the difference!
Don't Get Discouraged

I know that cutting weight for wrestling season sounds complicated, but really, it is not when you break it down into smaller sections. Just remember to drink plenty of water, eat small, frequent meals to keep your energy levels up, and start training.
