Feeling bloated, puffy and miserable? You could be retaining extra water. If you're having a hard time zipping up your normally comfortable jeans read on for some simple tips on how to lose water weight.
Our bodies retain water for a number of different reasons. Certain medications can cause water retention, although more commonly it is caused by poor diet, lack of exercise and dehydration. When you don't give your body enough water it starts clinging on to whatever water it can find and stores it away since it doesn't know when it will be getting more. This extra stored water can cause bloating and puffiness and can make you feel pretty uncomfortable.
Don't worry, though! Losing water weight is actually pretty easy. Try these things to get started:
1. Drink more water. Staying hydrated is one of the keys to eliminating excess water in your body, so start trying to increase the amount of water you drink each day. I know at first it sounds counterproductive - to lose water you have to drink more water? The truth is, though, when your body is sure that it will be getting more water it will release the water it has stored away.
2. Cut back on salt. Salt has a tendency to dehydrate you so your body starts hanging on to any water that it can find. Cutting back on how much salt you are eating can go a long ways toward getting rid of that water. At the same time you should also try to cut back on the amount of sugar that you eat. This helps to drop your insulin levels and will allow your body to get rid of extra sodium.
3. Try foods or herbs that act as natural diuretics. Certain foods naturally help your body eliminate water. Some to try are dandelion root, green tea, apple cider vinegar, cranberry juice or parsley.
4. Add lemon, lime or cranberry juice to your water. Adding a splash of any of these to your water won't just improve the taste, but because the citrus acts as a natural diuretic it will aid in water elimination as well.
5. Increase your exercise. Now, you don't have to go gung-ho and hit the gym every day to see results. Instead, try taking a walk each day or finding some other exercise you enjoy. Adding exercise will help your body to get rid of both water weight and extra sodium.
