Weight Management - Some Useful Rules to Follow

If you are keen to lose weight, and/or reach a healthy weight for your height and build, here are a few useful and realistic rules that I would encourage you to consider:

Body weight Evaluation

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is the generally accepted measure of body fat against muscle (lean body mass). It is not a precise measurement and often does not take into account those with extremely muscular physiques, but as a ball park figure to evaluate your weight it is useful. A Brief search on the internet will find you an online BMI calculator.

Gradual Weight Loss not Rapid Weight Loss

The 'lose 30 pounds in 30 days' weight loss plans that seem to continuously circulate looking for new victims should be avoided at all costs. Dependent on the amount of weight you need to lose, the generally accepted percentage loss is 10% of your body weight in a 6 month period, and this is what you should be aiming for. If you aim to lose 1 to 2 pounds per week, you will manage your weight loss in a sustainable manner and are far more likely to keep it off for the long term.

Encourage Your Children to Maintain Healthy Weights

Everyone knows the saying that overweight children become overweight adults. In most cases it is true, and one of the great gifts you can give your children is to teach them to eat healthy food and to be physically active. It will serve them well in later life.

Before you Begin a Weight Loss Program - Speak with Your Doctor

Consulting one's doctor is a good idea for those about to begin a weight loss plan. This is particularly true if you are a pregnant woman or are currently nursing a child. If you have a chronic disease or are on medications, you should also consult your doctor. It's a good precaution to take, and he/she may be able to offer good advice or resources to help you in your quest.

It's certainly a big decision starting on a new weight loss plan. Excitement, anticipation, a little bit of fear and apprehension. but by following the basic steps one can reach one's goals and gain self esteem and confidence in the process.I hope these basic tips will encourage you to begin on a sensible weight loss program and assist you in making the right decisions before beginning a weight loss plan.
